Who Is Augusta Precious Metals?
Augusta Precious Metals is a Casper, Wyoming-based Gold IRA company founded in 2012. They specialize in helping investors roll over existing retirement accounts (401(k), traditional IRA, 403(b)) into self-directed Gold or Silver IRAs backed by physical precious metals stored in IRS-approved depositories.
They are not a custodian or investment adviser. Augusta acts as the dealer — they sell you the metals. The IRA custodial function is handled through partners like Equity Trust Company, an IRS-approved Self-Directed IRA custodian.
Fees and Minimum Investment
Fees confirmed as of 2025. Always verify directly with Augusta before opening an account. Dealer markup (the spread between spot price and what you pay) varies and is disclosed on each purchase.
The Education Model — What Makes Augusta Different
Augusta's best-known differentiator is their web conference model. Before any sales conversation happens, prospects attend a one-on-one web conference with an economics director who explains Gold IRA basics — how they work, what the IRS rules are, what the risks are.
This isn't unusual for a high-minimum company — it makes sense to educate prospects before a $50,000 conversation. But relative to competitors who go straight for the close, Augusta's approach genuinely stands out.
BBB Rating and Complaints
Augusta holds an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau and is accredited. Their complaint count is low relative to their business volume, and most complaints that were filed were resolved. Trustpilot scores also run high.
No company in this space has zero complaints. Augusta has a few. Common themes in negative reviews include: feeling that the fees weren't clearly explained during the sales call, and dissatisfaction with the pace of the rollover process (which is partly an IRS and custodian timing issue, not purely Augusta's fault).
